There’s something so rewarding about photographing someone who lives and breathes their craft—and Kate Drayton of Super Hair 0 is exactly that kind of person.

I recently had the pleasure of capturing Kate in a portrait-style brand shoot, showcasing not only her professionalism and creative energy but also the warmth and authenticity she brings to her work as one of Wānaka’s leading bridal hair and makeup artists.

With nearly 20 years of experience, Kate is a true expert in her field—award-winning, highly qualified, and continually upskilling to stay on top of industry trends. She’s trained under some of the best, including Melbourne styling guru Justine Wolf, and holds both a national certificate in hairdressing and a diploma in makeup artistry.

Based in the breathtaking Wānaka region, Super Hair 0 offers mobile hair and makeup services (and now on-site in Luggate) for weddings, events, editorials, and more. Weddings, in particular, are at the heart of Kate’s business. She’s known for making the getting-ready experience relaxed, joyful, and fun—whether you’re after natural, soft glam or full-blown red carpet vibes.

Our shoot took place in her cozy, home-based studio—affectionately called the “she shed.” It’s the perfect creative space, filled with light, personality, and a sense of calm that reflects Kate’s entire approach to beauty: polished, effortless, and totally personal.

But what truly sets Kate apart is her heart. She gives back generously to her community—volunteering her time and talent for events like “Stars in Your Eyes,” fundraising for the Cancer Society (including shaving her own head!), and organising hair-cutting events for charity. She’s a mum, a snow sport lover, a former ski instructor, and a multi-talented force behind a business that’s as thoughtful as it is professional.

Through this brand shoot, I wanted to capture all of that—the passion, the artistry, and the person behind Super Hair 0.
